What was the RTI about?
Kiran Kumar Gowd in his RTI asked three questions:
Question 1: Total number of General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD faculty positions – Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors allocated to Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) across the country.
Question 2: Total number of filled General OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD faculty positions – Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors allocated to Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Management (IIMs)
Question 3: Total number of vacant General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD faculty positions – Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors allocated to Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Management (IIMs)
Replying to his questions, IIM Tiruchirappalli and IIM Indore shared the following responses:
IIM Tiruchirappalli’s response:
The data from IIM Tiruchirappalli reveals a significant disparity in the filling of reserved category positions. Of the 94 total sanctioned posts, nearly half (48) remain unfilled. The SC, ST, OBC, and EWS categories are severely underrepresented.
Meanwhile, all 40 General category positions have been filled. This stark contrast highlights the persistent underutilization of reserved positions, raising concerns about institutional commitment to affirmative action policies and equal representation.

The data reveals a stark imbalance in the faculty composition across categories at the institution:
- General Category: Out of 150 total faculty positions, a disproportionate 106 are filled by General category candidates, covering Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors.
- OBC Representation: Only 2 positions, both at the Assistant Professor level, are occupied by OBC candidates.
- EWS Representation: Only 1 Assistant Professor position is filled by an EWS candidate.
- SC, ST, and PwD Representation: There are no faculty members from the SC, ST, or PwD categories.
Additionally, 41 positions remain vacant across all categories, further indicating a significant shortfall in filling reserved category positions, especially in SC, ST, and PwD groups. This data underscores a severe underrepresentation of marginalized groups in the faculty, suggesting a lack of diversity and equity in hiring practices.
