For many, especially those from a science background, securing admission into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a dream. India is home to 23 IITs, but gaining entry into one is no easy feat. Every year, lakhs of students appear for the JEE Mains and Advanced exams, and out of these, only a few thousand secure seats in the IITs. Among these prestigious institutions is the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.In the NIRF Rankings 2024, IIT Guwahati secured the 9th position in the engineering category, solidifying its reputation as one of the top institutes in the country.
However, admission to IIT Guwahati is not only challenging but can also be expensive. To support students, IIT Guwahati offers several scholarship programs. In this article, we will explore the various scholarships available for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students at IIT Guwahati.
IIT Guwahati provides the following scholarships:

  • Institute Merit Scholarship (IMS)
  • Institute Merit-cum-Means (McM) Scholarships
  • SC-ST Scholarships

Institute Merit Scholarships (IMS):

The IMS is available for B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc., and M.A. students, aimed at recognizing year-wise class toppers across all streams. The scholarship is awarded from the second year onwards.
Eligibility Criteria:
Continuous Completion:

  • For second-year scholarship: Must have completed the I and II semesters without a break.
  • For third-year scholarship (B.Des./B.Tech. students): Must have completed the III and IV semesters.
  • For fourth-year scholarship (B.Des./B.Tech. students): Must have completed the V and VI semesters.

Academic Performance:

  • The student must have cleared all relevant courses in the first attempt.
  • Must achieve the highest Yearly Performance Index (YPI) for the semesters being considered.

Disciplinary Record: The student must not have been subject to any major disciplinary action by the Institute Disciplinary Committee (IDC).
Scholarship Duration and Benefits:
The IMS covers two semesters: August-November and January-April, for a total of 8 months. Under this, the students will get a stipend of Rs. 500 per month for two semesters and full tuition waiver for both semesters.

Institute Merit-cum-Means (McM) Scholarship:

The McM Scholarship is awarded to non-SC/ST students enrolled in B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc., or M.A. programmes at the institute. It is granted strictly on a merit-cum-means basis, following recommendations from the scholarship committee.
Eligibility Criteria:
Parental Income:

  • The annual income of the student’s parents must not exceed Rs. 4.5 lakhs (subject to government notifications).
  • Students whose +2 school tuition fees exceeded Rs. 30,000 per annum are ineligible.

Student Eligibility:

  • First-year B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc., and M.A. students are eligible to apply.
  • For second, third, and fourth-year undergraduate students and second-year M.Sc./M.A. students, a minimum CPI of 6.0 is required.
  • A maximum of 25% of non-SC/ST students from these programmes can receive the scholarship, as per institutional statutes.

Selection Criteria:
Points Calculation: The selection process is based on a total of 100 points, calculated from parental income (60%) and merit (40%).
Income-based Weightage:

  • Below Rs. 1,50,000: 50 marks
  • Rs. 1,50,000 – Rs. 2,50,000: 47.5 marks
  • Rs. 2,50,000 – Rs. 3,50,000: 45 marks
  • Rs. 3,50,000 – Rs. 4,50,000: 42.5 marks

Merit-based Weightage: For second, third, and fourth-year students, merit is calculated by multiplying their CPI by five. For first-year students, merit is determined by dividing the percentage of marks from the qualifying exam by two.
Scholarship Duration and benefits
The scholarship covers two semesters: August-November and January-April, totaling 8 months. Under this students will get a stipend of Rs. 1,000 per month for two semesters with full tuition fee waiver for two semesters.

SC-ST Scholarship

The SC-ST Scholarship is awarded to all SC/ST students pursuing B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc., or M.A. programmes, based on financial need.
Eligibility Criteria:
Parental Income:

  • The annual income of the student’s parents must not exceed Rs. 4.5 lakhs, subject to government notifications.
  • Students who have completed their +2 education at schools with annual tuition fees exceeding Rs. 30,000 are ineligible.

Student Eligibility: All B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc., and M.A. students from SC/ST categories are eligible to apply.
Scholarship Duration:
The scholarship is granted for two semesters: August-November and January-April, covering a total of 8 months.
Benefits:

  • A monthly stipend of Rs. 250 for two semesters (8 months).
  • Free basic menu messing in the hostel.
  • Exemption from hostel room rent.
  • Full tuition fee waiver for all SC/ST students, regardless of whether they avail the SC-ST Scholarship or not.
