VISAKHAPATNAM: The first edition of the two-day International Synthetic Fuels Conference (ISFC-2024), held at GITAM University, Visakhapatnam, concluded, leaving a lasting impact on the global discourse on clean energy and sustainable development. The conference, organised by GITAM University, the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), and Amity University, brought together 24 international and Indian experts and over 150 participants to deliberate on the ‘integration of nuclear and hydrogen fuels for energy transition.’
The conference featured plenary addresses by Dr.Vijay Kumar Saraswat, member of NITI Aayog, and Dr. John McAuliff, senior adviser on clean energy to the US government. Other notable speakers included experts from renowned institutions like Georgia Mason University, Huddersfield University, BARC, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and industry leaders from NTPC and L&T.
It emphasised the urgent need to transition towards clean energy sources to mitigate climate change and achieve net-zero emissions. The discussions cantered around the potential of nuclear energy and hydrogen fuels in decarbonising various sectors, including industry and transportation. The conference also showcased cutting-edge research and technological advancements in small modular reactors , hydrogen production, and carbon capture utilization and storage. The role of electronic beamers in SMR design and the utilization of CO2 from seawater for hydrogen production were among the key topics explored.
It aimed to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government, paving the way for future research projects and initiatives in clean energy. The organizers announced plans to continue the ISFC series, with the next conference scheduled for 2025 in Bengaluru or Hyderabad. The conference stressed upon the role of clean energy in achieving the Viksit Bharat vision, highlighting the importance of sustainable energy solutions for India’s development and prosperity.
Commenting on the same, Prof. V.S.R.K. Prasad, former director of the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy said, “It is our responsibility to educate about pollution-free energy sources and ensure no further damage is done to the environment.”
Dr M Ganapati, conference chair said, “We have just started our journey and strongly believe India will be self-sufficient in fossil fuels in a decade and will be able to export the fuels thereby becoming energy independent, prosperous and healthy.”
Prof. Yejju Gouthama Rao said, “Cost-effective, clean and sustainable energy plays an important role in transforming India from an emerging developed economy to a developed economy by 2047.”
According to the organisers, the ISFC-2024 was a crucial platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and charting a roadmap for a sustainable energy future. The conference highlighted the potential of nuclear and hydrogen technologies in achieving a clean energy transition and underscored the importance of continued research and development in this field.
