PATIALA: State General Secretary of the Congress Party’s student wing NSUI, under the leadership of Patiala Member of Parliament Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi, strongly announced to oppose the Punjab Government‘s alleged attempts to hand over nearly century-old, well-established government colleges of Punjab to corporate houses under the guise of autonomy and privatization.
Dr. Gandhi said, “This is a nefarious conspiracy to deprive poor children of education. The purpose is also to establish the dominance of communal ideology by recruiting professors aligned with the RSS’s ideology in these prestigious educational institutions”.
NSUI General Secretary Anish Kansal said that on one hand, the government is promoting private-sector-friendly policies in the education sector by sending the owners of private universities to the Rajya Sabha, and now it is proceeding with privatization to fulfil their interests.
He said, “The government’s education model has been exposed. In 64 colleges, only 157 professors are teaching, and only 38 principals are working. Around 45 professors might be retired in 2025 whereas 35 might be retired in 2026 and so on. There are 2033 vacant posts in Punjab’s government colleges. In comparison, Punjab has 550 private colleges whereas in Haryana there are 180 government colleges and 180 private colleges. Among the eight colleges being made autonomous in Punjab includes Mahindra college Patiala, government Girls college Patiala, Women college of Amritsar, two Government Colleges in Ludhiana, Government college Mohali, Government College Malerkotla, and Government college Hoshiarpur”.
They said if the government does not revoke this anti-people policy, a massive public movement will be launched.
