What is the Regent Admission Index (RAI)?
The Regent Admission Index (RAI) is a scoring system designed to predict a student’s potential for success at Iowa’s regent universities. The RAI combines several factors, such as the student’s ACT or SAT scores, high school cumulative grade point average (GPA), and the number of core high school courses completed. By evaluating these critical academic components, the RAI helps universities identify students who are well-prepared for the challenges of higher education.
Why is the RAI Important?
The RAI is necessary because it provides a standardized method for assessing a student’s academic readiness for university-level coursework. It helps ensure that students admitted to Iowa’s universities have met certain academic standards, which is crucial for maintaining the quality and integrity of the educational experience. The RAI is particularly important for automatic admission. For Iowa high school graduates, a minimum RAI score of 245, along with the completion of the required high school courses, guarantees automatic admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa. Students who score below 245 may still be considered for admission but will undergo an individual review process.
How is the RAI Calculated?
Calculating the RAI score involves three components:
- ACT/SAT Scores: The ACT composite score (or its SAT equivalent) is multiplied by 3.
- Cumulative GPA: The student’s high school GPA, whether weighted or unweighted, is multiplied by 30.
- Core Courses: The total number of years the student has completed in core high school courses (such as English, mathematics, science, social studies, and world languages) is multiplied by 5.
The formula for calculating the RAI score is:
RAI Score = (3 x ACT composite score) + (30 x Cumulative GPA) + (5 x Number of years of core courses completed).
Which Core Courses are Considered?
To calculate the RAI, the following college-prep courses are counted:
- English: 4 years
- Mathematics: 3 years (including Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry; 4 years required for Engineering)
- Social Studies: 3 years (2 years required for Engineering)
- World Language: 2 years of the same language
- Science: 3 years, including physical science, biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics
Any additional courses in these core areas beyond the minimum required can also be used to calculate the RAI. Students and parents are encouraged to consult with high school counselors or contact the university admissions offices to determine which courses qualify as college-prep.
Minimum Course Requirements
The minimum high school course requirements for first-year applicants differ based on their chosen field of study. For those applying to programs in Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business, Public Health, or Education, the requirements include 4 years of English/Language Arts, 2 years in a single World Language, 3 years of Natural Science (including courses in physical science, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or physics), 3 years of Social Studies, 2 years of Algebra, and 1 year of Geometry.
For Engineering applicants, the requirements include 4 years of English/Language Arts and 2 years in a single World Language. The Natural Science requirement is 3 years, with a recommendation for one year each of physics and chemistry. Social Studies is required for 2 years, Algebra for 2 years, Geometry for 1 year, and an additional year in Higher Mathematics, such as pre-calculus or an equivalent course.
Applicants to the Nursing Direct Admission Program must complete 4 years of English/Language Arts and demonstrate at least second-level proficiency in one World Language. The Natural Science requirement includes 3 years, covering one year each of biology, chemistry, and physics. Additionally, 3 years of Social Studies, 2 years of Algebra, and 1 year of Geometry are required. There is no explicit requirement for Higher Mathematics for the Nursing program.
