ANI has quoted the Additional Secretary, Education (School) Department, Govt. of Tripura, saying, “Due to the present weather conditions like heavy rainfall/flood/ landslide etc in the State, it has been decided that all schools like Govt., Govt. Aided schools, Privately managed schools, schools under TTAADC, Madrasas etc throughout the state shall remain closed on August 21 and 22.”
The Education (School) Department cited that the decision was made to prioritize student safety amid the current weather conditions.
“All the District Education Officers are hereby instructed to convey this decision to every school under their jurisdiction,” the order further stated.
Tripura school holiday due to heavy rains: Tripura CM’s proactive measures
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to dispatch additional NDRF teams to support response efforts.
He shared on X, “Spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and briefed him on the current situation arising out of severe flood situation. I also requested to dispatch additional NDRF teams to support our response efforts. The Home Minister assured me of all possible support during this crisis. I am grateful to him for providing all possible support to us at this hour.”
“All the officials of the district administration of various districts, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and local authorities are on high alert and have been working together to provide assistance and support to the people in the flood-affected areas,” reads the social media post of Saha.
The CM also called upon social organizations, NGOs, and all citizens to stay vigilant and offer their full support during this crisis. “Your every iota of contribution can make a significant difference to the response and relief efforts,” he further added.
Challenging weather conditions grip Tripura
Landslides have been observed in several regions of Tripura, with numerous roads, including National Highways, being obstructed as trees toppled from intense rainfall.
In the past 24 hours, Bagafa and Belonia in South Tripura districts experienced rainfall of 375.8 mm and 324.4 mm respectively, while Amarpur in Gomati district recorded 307.14 mm. Additionally, parts of Khowai district also saw significant rainfall, as reported.
On Tuesday, a landslide caused by continuous rainfall in Devipur ADC village, Tripura, resulted in the deaths of three family members and left one injured. The deceased include Trisankar Chakma, his 41-year-old wife Ranj Chakma, and their 12-year-old daughter, Mita Chakma.
Recent reports indicate that a total of 183 relief camps have been established, offering shelter to 5,607 families. These camps include 24 in the West district, 30 in the South Tripura district, and 39 in the Khowai district.
Tripura weather forecast by IMD
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall will persist over Tripura for the next two days. On Tuesday, the IMD explained that the continuous rainfall is due to a low-pressure area over central Bangladesh and its surrounding regions.
A release from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Agartala on Tuesday, on the other hand, mentioned that the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above sea level and is expected to move north-northwest across West Bengal in the next 48 hours.
